Show us a piece of a Razor Fields panorama that shows more of the corruption in the area. The razorgrass here is dull and jagged, and the hexagonal tiles from which it "grows" are distorted and cracked at the edges, like the silver version of a dried-up mud flats. Black liquids seeps through the edges between the hexagons. Stormy clouds surround the skies directly above a mountainous tower of natural and architectural elements.

It's a medical hover sled that picks up wounded or malnourished victims and brings them back to safety. Mostly used in high snow terrains.

Thirst For 3D

So I've been in a traditional program and just focused on that since January. I haven't even touched 3D! So I've had a thirst for it lately and I'm going to model a witch's head. I'm hoping to model it in Zbrush, texture it and paint it with Bodypaint and hopefully render it.

Here are some quick sketches I did during class. Wish me luck! This project will take a long time as my schedule is hectic and hopefully I'll be able to finish it.

My trip to Blizzard

Hey everyone,

Hopefully I tackle this blog more often but It's just hard to do with a lot of school work ahead of me but I'll try.
It's been a while a lot has happened.

Last Sunday, I visited the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. I can't say much about it but the oil paintings from the Dutch which were gloomy and really cool. The architectural tour was probably my favorite part. The building's designs were created by Richard Meier and it's amazing the thought process it takes to make building not only on a hill, but how to blend the landscape around it. The German architect has done other amazing establishments and I'm definitely going to research more of his work.

Ok! Let's talk about blizzard! I know what you were thinking, "Fuck the Getty! Lets hear about Blizzard!" Yes, I had a private exclusive tour of the facility thanks to some close connections. The place is heavily guarded and it's probably easier to meet the pope than to even come close coming inside of this place.

I could only take pictures of the gallery and some displays but nothing beyond that point. Which is still something and better than nothing. I'll post some pictures and hopefully i can post all of them if Blogspot lets me. The gallery consisted of purely all concept art for the coming Diablo and Starcraft releases. There were a lot environment and creature concepts than anything. I'll post the video here or on Youtube if I remember.

The first thing you'll notice and I'm sure anyone whose ever been to Blizzard has noticed the big 12' tall orc in the center of their courtyard. Nothing defines power more than an epic statue of an orc riding a wolf into battle in front of a building where the world's best cinematics are made. Travis Bourbeau told us it was modeled in the Weta Workshop and then shipped to China for the bronze molding. It was hard labor and took two years for the making of this epic piece of beauty. I'll post some pics!

I got to meet famous 3D modeler Fausto De Martini who has been one of my all time 3D modeler idols. He's a real cool guy and informed us a lot about all the questions we threw at him. He's the 3D Art Director for the Cinematics Department and that work floor was beyond cool and amazing. It's very spacious and casual. Blizzard makes sure everyone's comfortable and they're pretty loose on attire and you can even bring your dog to work. I don't want to say they were in cubicles because that would not be the right term. I would say it's more of a gridded low wall structure where if you stood up from your desk, you could talk to someone else on the other side. The sections were very spacious and each desk as I walked by was surrounded by mecha toys, posters, and 1 foot tall replicas of the space marines, Protoss warriors and more than I can remember. It was dark but yet had sufficient lighting towards where it wasn't creepy but cool at the same time. It was a very comfortable setting where people can take a break outside or go on a quick coffee break. Each section of a "cubicle", had four large desks in each corner where you can just simply turn around and had instant access to three more people for fast communication. As we walked around and as Fausto was explaining the workflow, there were toy guns and foam swords everywhere. It looks like Blizzard employees really take their breaks seriously.

Near the end, Fausto took us to see the gym and the cafeteria. Employees still pay for the food but when crunch time is around and overtimes starts to increase, they give their employees vouchers which I thought was cool. It seems like Blizzard does a good job to have everything nearby and at your hands to where you don't have to leave the studio for anything but for going home.

In the end, Fausto gave us a great lecture for those who want to make it here. For him, coming from advertising work from Brazil, he learned speed and when to meet deadlines. It's crucial for an art director to come from a generalist background so you have to know a little bit of everything. Actually not a little bit, but pretty proficient towards everything of the process for the results. Personal work also plays a big role. It can develop popularity depending how well and how often you do it. If you get to the point where you've made a brand to yourself, then you're immediately worth more and people will go out of their way to hire you. There was a lot more advice but from the top of my head that's all I can remember.

First Studio Visit

Hey guys,

It's been a busy week and sorry for the lack of posting.
I visited my first studio in LA, Rhythm and Hues, which seems like a an awesome place to work. They're really flexible and chill like some other studios. Like these, according to my Overview of Effects teacher Travis Bourbeau, are relaxed and family-orientated places to work at. I even met a guy who brings his dog in his office and work alongside with his compansion. Other studios don't give a shit about your kids, work hours or leaving the studio for lunch.

I'll post some pics from the studio. They specialize in fur so in any cg short, commercial or movie you saw fur, they're most likely responsible.

I joined Conceptart.org and joined their Teen Weekly Challenges. This week's theme is War Goblin Machine and I posted a quick thumbnail of some machinery doodles; we'll see where it goes from there. It's due on Tuesday, I'll post the final here when i finish it. I might even post some WIP.

School's been great and not a day goes by I don't sketch.

I've been reading Outlier by Malcolm Gladwell which is a great so far! It pretty much summarizes that it takes 10,000 hours to master a certain craft. 10,000 hours!
Thats pretty much practicing a certain activity 5 hours for 5 years everyday!
Or a little bit under 3 hours everyday for 10 years. Whew!

Hey everyone!

This week has been really intense but I'll just tell you all the highlights about them. Ok here we go!

One tiny episode i had forgotten to talk about actually happened on Monday the 11th. I was walking back to my car and it was past ten and my surroundings weren't the safest places to be around at that time. Heh ok so I saw my car and just from that was I felt relieved it wasn't towed or had a ticket. Immediately I felt my pockets for my keys but they were no where to be felt. I had a mini panic and started to search my backpack. I was so exhausted that i did not even want to start eyeballing the sidewalk for them so i tried the car doors. Both locked. And to top it off, there was a guy across the street, staying low, almost kneeling and smoking a joint. He gestured a "hello" by lightly lifting up his joint and going to back smoke it.

So I thought i was pretty much screwed when I remember back in Vegas, I sometimes left my trunk open just in case i forgot my keys or such matter. Thank god it was open! I hopped in there so fast as is the road was burning my feet. I started my car, my gps, and waving goodbye to the stoner across the street as i got the hell out of there.

My First Day at Gnomon

Hey everyone,

Yesterday was my first class at Gnomon and also Orientation Day
I arrived at Hollywood around 2:30 PM and orientation didn't start until 4, so I had some time on my hands. I decided to take a walk up a few blocks towards Sunset Blvd. I found a really neat store called Amoeba Music, which is the world's biggest independent record store that has huge, masses of records, cds, dvds, posters, and anything you can find that's related to music that's from around the whole world. I would have loved to stay for some more but I didn't want to be late.

I arrived at the lecture hall and waited for the administrators to set up while meeting some classmates. Surprisingly there were students there from all over the world. Some out state and some even out of the country. We had a lecture on the classes in general and some of the lab hours.

After that, orientation only lasted for about 20 minutes when we had another class starting at 7. My classmates and I pretty much killed time by getting to know one another, which was really neat to meet and hear stories from people with different backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences.

The Gnomon Gallery, which right now is showing the art of Dylan Cole, is definetely an eye opener. If anyone has the chance to see it, go see it. Even though it's a particularly small gallery, it's rich in its work.

Visual Communications started at 7 and had David Le and my teacher. Seems like an experienced teacher and know's what he is teaching. The subject was perspective and I relearned a lot of the techniques I already know, but it is refreshing and I did learn some shortcuts.

Overall, pretty good first day and looking forward to the rest of the week.

Heres some of my work as I promised. I'm thinking of making a whole new blog just for my work. I'll see. But here's a quick concept I made last year. My influences were probably Starcraft and a bit of War of the Worlds.

Today, I just got settled in and ready to kick butt at Gnomon! I'm living in the wonderful city of LA, but more specifically in Pico Rivera. I bought a Garmin GPS and ready to face the infamous traffic of LA tomorrow.

Orientation starts at 4 pm tomorrow and pretty excited. Here are some pics of my room!

Enrolled at Gnomon!

But before I introduce myself and anything else beforehand, I would like to explain the reason why I'm starting this blog. Throughout high school, it was pretty clear that the cg industry was the right path for me as i always had drawn and even sketched little doodles on the side of my notebook. It had hit me hard and must confess, somewhat addicted to this work as it brings me great joy and hopefully one day inspiration to others. I want to start my story here, as I'm 18 years old, fresh out of high school but have a great ambition to dive head first and explore this "Hollywood Life".

Maybe someone out there is doing the same exact thing I'm doing now, starting a blog as their about to take a new chapter into their lives. But I haven't found one so I'm starting one. I know criticisms and conflicts will arise as I have a beginner experience but that's the point. I want someone else to read this and know, "Wow, this guy started out sucking ass but now look at him, his work is great!". So I will try to blog my "journey"

My name is Eduardo Borrego and my first day at Gnomon is January 11th 2010. I attended high school in Las Vegas and will be moving to LA in a couple of days with a beloved aunt and uncle. My aunt has always helped since day one and I will always be forever grateful for her letting me stay with her.

I've had previous experience as i majored in Graphic Design all the way through high school. I'm confident to say I'm at least above average when it comes to typography and graphic design. I'll post some work later=). I've started to use Zbrush and Maya junior year but to this day, my modelling skills are not too great. I just need some practice.

Anyway, thats all I got for today. I hope I get some followers. I'm also new to this whole "blogging" world so dont beat me up too badly. Thank you for your time!
